About Empowered NYC
EmpoweredNYC employs a multi-strategy approach, led by the City of New York, to improve the financial health and stability of people with disabilities and their families through broad community engagement, specialized training for financial counselors, educational materials for individuals, and free, professional, one-on-one financial counseling. EmpoweredNYC’s programmatic components have been tested and proven to be successful in supporting New Yorkers with disabilities and their families improve their financial health and stability. The initiative serves as a blueprint for developing accessible and trusted financial counseling and coaching programs for the disability community in cities across the nation.
EmpoweredNYC components include:
Large scale community engagement and outreach that include over 160 community events and the first City marketing campaign for New Yorkers with disabilities
Specialized training for financial counselors focused on government benefits for people with disabilities, avoiding benefits cliffs, and other financial situations specific to the disability community
Developing a learning community for financial counselors and financial capability service providers
Educational webinars informing the broader disability community on financial topics such as the benefits of saving in an NY ABLE account
Professional, confidential, one-on-one financial counseling and coaching offered by certified financial counselors
The impact of EmpoweredNYC was the catalyst for the creation of Empowered Cities.
Launched in 2018 and co-developed and supported by Citi, EmpoweredNYC is a collaboration among NYC MOPD, NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) Office of Financial Empowerment (OFE), National Disability Institute (NDI), and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. EmpoweredNYC is built on New York City’s model for financial counseling. DCWP protects and enhances the daily economic lives of New Yorkers to create thriving communities. Within DCWP, OFE is the first local government initiative in the country with the mission to educate, empower, and protect New Yorkers and neighborhoods with low incomes so they can build assets and make the most of their financial resources.
Empowerment ED is a free monthly webinar series to train service providers, caseworkers, other professionals who work with people with disabilities to better understand and address the unique financial situations of people with disabilities.
